I am sure you guys have seen the squads when capping the games. However, thought this may be of some value to you.

To me, Argentina and Brazil have obviously sent the strongest squads with Argentina probably the strongest. I would rate Mexico third. The US sent a VERY young and inexperienced squad and appear to have left many of their better young players back home. I wouldn't expect much out of the US in this tournament and, frankly, I would be surprised if they get out of the group stages.

Very disappointed that the USSF decided to send a squad like this to this tournament. They won't improve beating up on the minnows in Concacaf and playing Mexico. Really disappointing that they chose to focus on the GOld Cup and not test the team against the better competition in the COpa America. I realize winning the Gold Cup gets them a Confed Cup invite in 09, but this is absurd. Regardless, best of luck.

Good points made. I think the reason they decided to leave some of their top players behind was due to a lot of players being in the MLS.

I am looking forward to the Confederations cup. That is basically a preview to the World Cup.

Argentina should win the tournament. The odds available are less than appealing though.

Noticed that Tapa. was going to post in your thread but didn't want to pollute it with posts unrelated to you and your thread. Agree about the Argies, they definitely sent the best team on paper.

The frustrating thing for my InSpades is the short sighted nature of the USSF decision to send a squad like this and focus on the Gold Cup instead. They pay lip service that they aren't respected and have to play well against big countries and then they pull something like this.

More than half of the Gold Cup Squad was European based, so the MLS argument only holds so much water. 11 guys from the Gold Cup squad were based in MLS, 6 of those 11 are on this squad as well. They basically left off all of the Euro based guys, Donovan, Ching, (I forget who the other 3 MLS based guys were). They will never get better pulling shit like this. Frankly, it is disrespectful to the tournament and the other nations, they are treating it like a scrimmage.

Euro teams, particularly English (howard, bocanegra, dempsey, beasley assuming he goes to Rangers) did not want their US players in this tournament or they would basically have no summer break before their seasons start back up. Does not excuse that the best MLS players (Hejduk, Donovan, Ching, Mastroeni) returned to their MLS squads. The way I see it is Bradley gets the best of both worlds ... if they advance from group they do so with their B team and if they get destroyed, big deal, it was their B team.

oh well, let's see what happens

that is weak, and, sounds more like a convenient excuse to play those guys in the Gold Cup instead of the Copa America. I am sure the Euro teams didn't want their guys playing in BOTH tournaments, which is understandable as that would have effectively had these guys playing continuously from August 2005 through May 2008 when you factor in WC during summer 06.

I think it is a garbage excuse b/c of the other teams, look at their rosters. They are littered with Euros.

Uruguay has 13, Brazil 19, Arg 16, even the US has 7. Didn't look at the other squads as the quality probably isn't there to get many guys to Europe.

It does provide Bradley with a convenient excuse for failure.

Interesting that Marvell Wynne's son is playing on the US National team now.

Baseball diehards may remember his father played for the Pirates and Mets. Saw him many times at AAA Tidewater.

Totally agree with you, this is disrespectful to the organization of southamerica but in the other hand this could be a chance to see new talents for USA, you never know maybe the next donovan will raise in here.

Feel free to comment any time of anything in my thread.

guys, let me repeat, they had no choice on most of the European-based players. This has nothing to do with disrespecting a south american tournament.

Because the US has guest status for this tournament, unlike the Gold Cup, European clubs were not required to release their players for this tournament...and most decided not to because training camp begins in England in just a few weeks. In the case of Beasley, I'd guess that PSV did not want to risk $1M+ transfer to Rangers to allow him in this tourney.

so, while I'd like to see how the "A" team stacks up against Col/Par/Arg there was never a chance the true top squad could play.
